A Room with a View (3rd edition)

Toast Project presents the third edition of A Room with a View. The group exhibition features Lehar (b. 2003, India), Anja Stroka (b. 2005, Albania), Rosy Ramirez (b. 2002, Mexico), and Alexandra Rinja (b. 1999, Moldova).  Florence has many strong academic programmes and attracts art students from across the world but public visibility and sustained exchange for young artists outside everyday contexts remain rare. A Room with a View aims to act on this gap. This third edition brings together artists whose practices focus on the relationship between private experience and collective space, asking how personal histories can meet the sensibilities of the environments they inhabit.

About the work

Memory (playback) is a video work that explores what memory looks like and sits with the understanding that it is never neutral; it is entangled with grief and loss, shaped by what is absent as much as what remains. It shows personal memory as made up of fading fragments across time, stitched together rather than as a clear image. Oscillating between individual and collective history, it sees recollection as forever entangled with culture, places, people, and conversations. At its core, the work grapples with the particular emotional and generational weight as the first woman in my family to study abroad: the privilege of distance, and the awareness that this privilege was quietly built by the sacrifices of others so that one day, someone generations later could dream of something more. With inheritance comes an unspoken contract: to do better, to do enough, to make the opportunity count for something. The work holds the tenderness and the anxiety of being looked up to by younger siblings asking difficult questions, while quietly fearing the gap between who you are and who they need you to be. Threading through the footage are incomplete conversations from home that now return with the strange weight of premonition.
